What BMI is good for — and what it is not

BMI is a population screening tool, not a diagnosis. It was designed for statistical use across large groups, and it has well-known blind spots:

A more complete picture comes from combining BMI with waist circumference, body-composition measurements and your own medical history. Talk to a clinician before drawing conclusions from any single number.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI?

The WHO defines 18.5 to 24.9 as the normal range for adults. Individual health, however, depends on far more than this one ratio.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

No. Muscle is denser than fat, so muscular people frequently score as overweight despite low body fat.

Does BMI work for children?

Not with these numbers. Children and teenagers are assessed with age- and sex-specific percentile charts instead.

What is a better measure than BMI?

Combining BMI with waist circumference and body-fat percentage gives a much more useful picture. Waist-to-height ratio is another simple and surprisingly effective screen.
